Creating outside support services/ infrastructural facilities is considered to be as important as the development of the airport itself. The greatest emphasis is being laid on access roads. The plan is to take up and complete the supporting infrastructure at the earliest.

Rail
Rail linking Thalassery with Mysore will facilitate multi-modal access to the airport. The State Government is pursuing discussions with the Central Ministry of Railways on a proposal for 'Kannur International Airport Railway Station.
Tourism / Hotels
Tourism, especially health, pilgrimage and beach tourism, is being developed in the state to attract more national and international tourists. The airport is quite close to Wayanad and Kodagu (Coorg) which are well known locations for adventure and wild life tourism with great scenic beauty. Several hotel chains have come up to explore the tourism potential of the region.
Bekal
Bekal is the largest and most well preserved fort in Kerala. It is situated in Bekal in Kasargod district, which is 95kms away from Kannur Airport. The fort is spread over 40 acres. The important features of this fort are the water-tank with its flight of steps, the tunnel opening towards the south, the magazine for keeping ammunition and the broad and wide steps leading to the Observation Tower which is a rarity. This observation center had strategic significance in discovering even the smallest movements of the enemy and ascertaining safety of the Fort.
Pilgrimage Tourism
This is a branch of tourism which is being promoted in this area in view of the presence of a large number of internationally famous shrines belonging to different religions.
Industries
Traditional industries like textile, handloom and modern sectors like IT will get a boost with the establishment of the airport. Similarly the airport will grow consequent to the rapid industrialization from the flow of increased passengers, a win-win situation for both.

The phase I project cost is Rs. 1892 crore which is being funded by equity capital of Rs. 1000 crore and debt 892 crore. Authorised Capital of the Company was increased from Rs. 1000 crore to Rs. 1500 crore to fund the runway extension from 3050 metres to 3400 metres. At present the paid up equity capital of the Company is Rs. 1065 cr.

The Kannur International Airport (KIAL) is the second greenfield airport setup in the public private partnership (PPP) model in civil aviation infrastructure sector in kerala .
The Airport has been planned for development in phases on a modular basis to suit future requirements and also to minimize the initial investments so as to generate revenue at the earliest possible time.
The State’s prestigious greenfield Airport project named ‘KIAL’ will be coming up close to Mattannur in Kannur district of Kerala State. It is only 20 kms away from Kannur city, and 2 kms from Mattannur on Kannur – Mattannur – Mysore road.
The Airport is strategically located with easy access from NH-17 and SH-30 & 36. The main Railway line from Kanyakumary to Bombay is nearest to Airport and it is situated in between Thalasserry and Kannur railway station.
Objectives
- To provide an international gateway in the northern Malabar region with state-of-the art facilities to support safe, efficient and cost effective travel for foreign tourists and ‘non-resident’ Indians from Kerala, as well as domestic passengers.
- To act as air cargo hub for Malabar Region.
- To provide a host of commercial, trade promotion and industrial activities that can generate employment opportunities, provide avenues for the trade in traditional products to affluent markets in the Gulf and Europe and to open new vistas in the field of IT & ICT.
- To promote beach, pilgrimage and health tourism.
- To transform the North Malabar region into a highly developed growth centre for travel, tourism and industries.
