Bakel Fort

Bekal Fort is a medieval fort built by Shivappa Nayaka of Keladi in 1650 AD, at Bekal. It is the largest fort in Kerala, spreading over 40 acres (160,000 m2). 

The fort appears to emerge from the sea. Almost three-quarters of its exterior is in contact with water. Bekal fort was not an administrative centre and does not include any palaces or mansions.

An important feature is the water-tank, magazine and the flight of steps leading to an observation tower built by Tipu Sultan.Standing at the centre of the fort, this offers views of the coastline and the towns of Kanhangad, Pallikkara, Bekal, Mavval, Kottikkulam, and Uduma.

  1. By Road:

    • Distance: The distance between Kannur Airport and Bekal Fort is approximately 70 kilometers.
    • Taxi/Car: Hiring a taxi or taking a private car from Kannur Airport is the most convenient option. Taxis are readily available at the airport, and you can negotiate the fare or choose a taxi with pre-fixed rates. The journey takes around 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic conditions and the route taken.
    • Auto-rickshaw: Auto-rickshaws are also available in Kannur. You can hire an auto-rickshaw from the airport to reach Bekal Fort. Make sure to negotiate the fare beforehand.
  2. By Public Transport:

    • Bus: You can take a bus from Kannur Airport to Kannur city center. From there, you can find buses that travel to Bekal or nearby areas. Inform the bus conductor about your destination, and they can guide you to the nearest point to Bekal Fort. From that point, you can hire an auto-rickshaw or take a short walk to reach the fort.
    • Train: Kannur has a railway station, and you can take a train from Kannur to Kasaragod Railway Station. From Kasaragod, you can hire an auto-rickshaw or take a local bus to reach Bekal Fort, which is approximately 16 kilometers away.
